Eldersburg Parks and Recreation Guide

All directions are from the intersection of routes 32 and 26. Unless otherwise noted, all parks and recreational facilities are open from dusk to dawn. More information from Carroll County's Recreation and Parks department can be found at www.cccgovernment.carr.org or 410-386-2103.

Carroll County Public School grounds:
Many don't realize that the grounds and playground equipment of our local Carroll County Public Schools are open to the public when not in use by its students for events and training. This includes the tennis courts and tracks at area high schools. This privilege also provides a safe environment for children to ride bikes. There is usually plenty of free parking available too.

Carrolltowne Tennis Courts:
The Carrolltowne tennis courts are located next to the Eldersburg Public Library on W. Hemlock Road. These two gated tennis courts are unknown to many, but open to the public.

Freedom Park:
Freedom Park is located at 100 Raincliffe Road. Take Rt. 32 south and turn left onto Raincliffe Road. The park is at the top of the first hill on the right. This is one of the largest community parks in the area with many ball fields and multipurpose fields. You will also find a tot lot and concession stand, which is open periodically during game times. There are picnic tables, grills and pavilions to use as well.
The Freedom Area Recreation Council uses these fields for many of their sporting activities. For program information go to:
www.freddomarearec.com.

Hodges Park:
Hodges Park is located at 5630 Hodges Road. From the intersection of routes 26 and 32, take Route 32 North, left on Johnsville Road, right on Bartholow Road and a right on Hodges Road. The park is on the left.
This is a locked facility, but can be reserved through the Freedom Area Recreation Council. There are two ball fields and one multi-purpose field.

Liberty Reservoir:
The Eldersburg entrance to the Liberty Reservoir is located at 5685 Oakland Mills Road. Go east on Rt. 26 and turn left onto Oakland Mills Road. To go down to the first entrance, make an immediate right. There you will find a boat ramp and a small parking lot. The second entrance is a little farther down Oakland Mills Road on the right. This entrance also has a boat ramp and more open grassy areas for picnicking. Hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.

This site is great for bird watching and fishing. In fact, this is a favorite fishing spot where some have caught state record-sized striped bass and trout. Boat fishing is allowed from March 31-December 31.
Horseback riding and biking are also popular in this area.
When visiting the many Liberty Reservoir sights, please be aware that there is no fishing allowed between Liberty Road and Liberty Dam.
Swimming is also prohibited.

Mayeski Park:
Mayeski Park is located at 1300 W. Old Liberty Road, just past South Carroll High School, off of Rt. 26. Follow the road next to the stadium. This park is the home to the Winfield Recreation Council's large athletic program. There are many ball fields, multipurpose fields and volleyball courts, as well as a tot lot and pavilions.

Obrecht Road Field:
The Obrecht Road Field is located at 100 E. Obrecht Road. Take Rt. 32 south for 2 miles, then turn right onto Springfield Avenue. Turn right again onto 3rd Avenue. Third Avenue becomes Obrecht Road. The Sykesville Little League uses the baseball field that resides here.

Old Liberty Road Park:
This park is located at 100 W. Old Liberty Road and faces the Century High School and Linton Springs complex. There is a multipurpose field and ball field at this park.

Patapsco Valley State Park
McKeldin Area:
The 1,403-acre McKeldin Area of the Patapsco State Park is located on Marriottsville Road in Carroll County. Take Rt. 26 east to Ridge Road; turn right. At the stop sign, turn right onto Marriottsville Road 2.
This ends at Marriottsville Road. Turn left. The park is on the right-hand side. On the weekends, an entrance fee of $2 per person is collected at the gate. Children in car seats are not charged. During the week the fee is $4 per car. The park is open from 9 a.m. to sunset.

There are two tot lots, several ball fields, basketball courts and volleyball areas available at McKeldin. There are two large pavilions equipped with grills and a fireplace and eight smaller pavilions throughout the park. Hiking, biking and equestrian trails abound at this park. A unique feature to McKeldin is a disc golf course (Frisbee golf). Players come from far and wide to use the course on the grounds of this beautiful park.

The north and south branches of the Patapsco River unite in McKeldin.
There is also a cascading rapids area within the park. There are many small beach areas that are great for fishing and hiking. Swimming is not permitted due to dangerous undercurrents. Overnight use is limited to group youth camping by reservation only.

The Patapsco Valley State Park office number is 410-461-5005 and can be found on the web at www.dnr.maryland.gov.

Piney Run Park:

Piney Run Park is located at 30 Martz Road. Take Rt. 26 west and turn left onto White Rock Road. Then turn left onto Martz Road. An entrance fee is collected at the gate. Park hours are 6 a.m. to sunset daily between April 1 and October 31, closing times are posted at the entrance gate, please call. During the off-season, November 1-March 31, parking is permitted outside the entrance gate from sunrise to sunset.

The park is centered around Piney Run Reservoir, a 300-acre lake that was completed by the Corps of Engineers in 1974. Two boat ramps are available for use, however, gasoline motors are prohibited. Boat rentals, including paddleboats, rowboats, kayaks and canoes, are available at the boathouse. Night crawlers are sold during the park season, call for availability. A number of fishing tournaments are held throughout the year, including some night fishing opportunities. No boats are allowed on the lake during off-season, but fishing is permitted from the shoreline.

Two large tot lots, tennis and basketball courts are available for use at Piney Run. There are also many pavilions for rent and nice picnic areas.
Hiking trails are plentiful around the reservoir and through the woods too. New trail maps are in development and will be available soon, please ask at the gatehouse during the in-season.

Piney Run Park also hosts a terrific Nature Center that provides approximately 300 programs each year to the general public.
