Freedom Area Recreation
Council
The Freedom Area Recreation Council is an organization founded in
1990 that is responsible for creating numerous recreational programs
for the South Carroll area. Among these programs are the Freedom
Area Basketball League, Freedom Optimist Soccer, Arnis Tae-Kwon-Do,
Freedom Optimist Girls’ Softball, the Men’s South Carroll
Athletic Association (Softball), Sykesville Baseball, Sykesville
Raiders Football and Cheerleading, Youth and Adult Volleyball, Adult
Men’s Basketball, Horseback Riding and Freedom Optimist Lacrosse.
Freedom
Area Basketball League
The Freedom Area Basketball League is designed to provide education
and instruction to kids from kindergarten all the way up until 12th
grade. A travel program is also available for players on a higher
competitive level in grades 5-8 for girls and 4-8 for boys. The
seasons go from November to April. The games are held at a variety
of local places including Century, Liberty and South Carroll high
schools and Sykesville Middle School. More

Optimist Soccer
Freedom Optimist Soccer provides instruction for girls and boys
from ages 5 to 17. Seasons run from August to November. Game

Tae Kwon Do
Arnis
Tae Kwon Do is a self defense class where students will learn the
basics of Tae Kwon Do. Participants will also develop vital personal
skills such as courtesy and discipline through the Korean martial
art.

Freedom
Optimist Girls’ Softball
Girls
from ages 5-18 (18 year old girls must be enrolled in High School)
can compete in both fast and slow pitch softball under the instruction
of Freedom Optimist Girls’ Softball. Slow Pitch tournaments
are organized for girls ages 10 and older and fast pitch tournaments
are offered for girls ages 12, 14 , and at the High School level.
Seasons run from April to June and are conducted in a variety of
locations.

South Carroll Athletic Association
The
Men’s South Carroll Athletic Association organizes recreational
softball games for Men ages 18 years of age and older.

Sykesville
Baseball
Sykesville
Baseball offers instruction for girls and boys ages 5-18. Leagues
are broken up by age: T-Ball for 5 year olds, Intramural for ages
6-11, the Metro League for ages 11-16 and the Babe Ruth League for
ages 16-18. Sykesville Baseball has been helping kids learn and
play the sport of Baseball for over 38 years. Games and practices
are held at the OBrecht Road Complex, Freedom Park and local community
school fields.

summer baseball camp is also offered.

Baseball also offers an umpire training course for ages 12 and older.
Maryland State Certified High School/College umpires give instruction
for the class. Classes are six weeks long and run February to March.

The Sykesville Raiders Football &
Cheerleading program is a rec league for players ages 5 - 14. The
Sykesville Raiders are members of MMYFCL. The football team divisions
are based on age, weight and skill level. The cheer teams are based
on age. The teams compete in and around Carroll, Howard and Baltimore
County.

The Sykesville Raiders All Star Dance Team provides instruction
of girls 6-18 in competition dance and cheerleading as well as on
a non-competitive level. Cheerleading groups are broken down into
three levels, a senior team (grades 12 and under), junior team (grades
9 and under) and youth team (grades 6 and under).

Volleyball
games are offered to adults based on a drop-in basis at Carrolltowne
Elementary School Wednesday and Thursday evenings and Eldersburg
Elementary School on Friday evenings. Games offered only from September
through June.

Men’s Basketball
Adult Men’s basketball provides locations for pickup games
of basketball from September through June for men 18 years old and
older. Games are offered Monday and Thursday evenings at Liberty
High School as well as Sunday mornings at Oklahoma Middle School
in the months of January-March.

Horseback
Riding Lessons provided by Full Moon Farm
The
Freedom Area Recreation Council in partnership with Full Moon Farm
offers a six week course to youths ages 6-15. Instruction is based
on safety around horses, daily care of horses, grooming, nutrition,
gaits of a horse, breeds, and riding technique. Sessions are offered
all year.

Optimist Lacrosse
Freedom
Optimist Lacrosse offers play for girls and boys ages 5-14. Clinic
sessions are also held for newcomers to the sport. Practices and
games run from February-May. Boys and Girls teams are broken down
into the Pockets (ages 5-6), Tykers (7-8), Lightning (9-10), Midgets
(11-12), and Juniors (13-14).
