Eldersburg photo artists showed in force Friday evening at the town's
Carroll County Public Library branch to see who rose as the crème de la
crème in the 5th annual Eldersburg Photo Contest.
The event, sponsored by the Carroll Eagle and Eldersburg.net,
saw approximately 30 people in attendance as it got underway at 5:30 p.m.
There were about 60 entrants in the contest overall. Jon Allen of
Eldersburg.net and Jim Joyner of the Eagle were present to host the event
and hand out awards.
"We've been pleasantly surprised over the beauty, the variety,
the full spectrum," Allen commented on the submitted photographs. "Every
year it does not get easier to choose the winners."
"It's great to see people's enthusiasm," Joyner added.
The winners
Returning winners from last year's contest were Cara Patten, Alexandra Ward
and Tobie Abbajay. New winners were Rob Armstrong, Justin Nixon, William
Lack, Hannah Shuman, Amanda Johnson and Zach Renken.
Abbajay, A Sykesville resident who placed third overall last year with her
shot of a carnival swing ride, this year placed first in the landscape
category and first overall with her shot of a tranquil Piney Run lake scene
(http://www.eldersburg.net/photocontest2009/winners/overall_winner-l33.asp).
She netted a total of $125 worth of prizes.
"I just enjoy taking pictures," said Abbajay, mentioning that she mostly
photographed family portraits. "I was a little surprised, pleasantly
surprised."
She added that the lake shot had a fair bit of luck involved with it. "I'm
sure if I go again next year I won't be so lucky."
Placing second overall and first in the people category was Justin Nixon's
shot of a boy jumping from a swing
(http://www.eldersburg.net/photocontest2009/winners/overall_winner-p2.asp).
This capture of a seemingly death-defying act earned Nixon $75 in awards
altogether.
Third place overall and second place landscape finisher Cara Patten
succeeded in turning an ordinary cornfield into a mystical path with her
shot of a natural tunnel made by corn stalks
(http://www.eldersburg.net/photocontest2009/winners/overall_winner-l25.asp).
Her playing with perspective earned her a cool $40 in prizes.
Zach Renken, a Century High School student, placed fourth
overall and placed both second and third in the still life category, netting
him $50 in prizes. His overall winning photograph was an angled shot of a
street sign

His second place still life photo was a freeze-frame of rain falling on
Sykesville streets

"Every time it rains the camera and Zach are gone," his father
joked.
But not everyone in attendance was a winner. First time entrant Brittany
Prouser, a Liberty High School student, entered four photos total in the
contest, all in the landscape category, but saw none place. With 91 total
entries this category was by far the most competitive and largest, dwarfing
the next largest, the people category, by about 60.
