Nothing
to do in Eldersburg? Bloggers Say Otherwise
There
is an entry on Urbandictionary.com
that defines Eldersburg as “a quiet town with nothing to do
there except go to Denny's at indecent hours.” Most teenagers
in the area I’m sure would agree. It seems for adolescents
in “The Burg” that there aren’t as many exciting
opportunities as they would like and there won’t be any time
soon. Our quiet town may appear like the middle of nowhere, but
that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to do. You just
have to know where to look.
But
I also hang with my group of friends … most of the time and
we pretty much go to Eldersburg Elementary at night and play on
their playground and look up at the stars.
Our
deceptively low-tech town is home to more than 450 MySpaces, 100
Xangas, 40 LiveJournals and DeadJournals, and about 25 Bloggers,
and those are just from people who decided to list themselves under
Eldersburg. On these hundreds of pages, there is a widely undiscovered
slice of Eldersburg. It is here that the true quirks of our supposedly
boring town come out. After browsing through just a dozen journals
and blogs, it’s apparent that our 42.1 square miles of town
is much less Eldersburg, but more than ever the E-burg that has
been slang for so long.
WE
LEFT AND WENT TO BURGER KING WITH MY HEAD DOWN SINCE IT WAS STORMING
AND I WAS FREAKING OUT. WE CAME BACK TO MY HOUSE && YEAH,
LAYED ON MY BED & WATCHED THE LIGHTNING WHICH FREAKED ME OUT
ALOT AND I WAS LIKE OMFGGGG.
The
E-burg journalers are mostly teens and college students, though
it is not too uncommon to see a mother writing about her baby’s
first steps or an adult who started their journal back in college
and kept up with it. Journals are used for story telling, ranting,
picture posts, advertising parties, linking to web videos and jokes,
and reflection.
I
was reading one of my old journals and it's so cool to look back
on my life and have it all recorded...which is why I'm going to
start updating again. Maybe something interesting will happen to
me ;)
The
writings are personal, casual, usually error-ridden, and often times
incriminating. For this reason, many journalers choose to “friends
lock” their entries. This is where the E-burg residents monologue
about their noisy neighbors, how their shoes that got stuck to the
floors of the Carrolltowne movie theater during X-men 3, or what
a terrible day they had. These are obviously some of the things
you don’t want your mother to be reading.
the
only good part is when it was over it was awesome cause we went
to taco bell and nick was in the ttrunk of nates car and it was
spifarifical man
Usually,
though, at a certain point in journaler’s life, they switch
to the blogs to keep up with co-workers and distant relatives. In
general, blogs are kept to a certain level of formality. I’m
trying not to generalize, but blogs are sort of like the newsletters
you get at Christmastime from your relatives, only on a weekly basis.
Blogs are good reads, if nothing else.
Since
we moved into this neighborhood in August their friendship has truly
"blossomed." And I mean that literally. Rarely does a
day go by that we don't come home to a flower Shelby has left on
the front door for Jake to find.
And
then there is MySpace, which isn’t a blog or a journal at
all. It’s an extended personal ad, more or less, whether you
want to advertise yourself or not. MySpace transcends all groups
of people. I’ve seen people as young as 10 on the site and
as old as 60, but the usual age range is 15 to 30. By browsing through
these pages, joining groups, and posting some of your own life,
you can find yourself with dozens of new friends and invitations
to great last-minute events in Eldersburg that never make it to
the weekly paper for one reason or another, such as this announcement
a girl made on a public part of the site, supposedly directed towards
her friends:
i'm
having a sex toy party at my apartment on june 28 (a wednesday)
at 7pm. i need at least 12 girls to come. it's a blast. my friend
lauren and i went to one last night, and it was hilarious.
Eldersburg
has its own niche on the web, full of interesting people and experiences.
If one night you find yourself grasping for something to do in Eldersburg,
search through some user pages on Xanga, or post a bulletin on MySpace.
Read what journalers have found to do in The Burg; I’m sure
it’s better than bothering the Denny’s staff at 2 a.m.
And
last thursday we went out to the construction site over by the school
and we could tell that people had already [messed] it up pretty
bad but that didn’t stop us from [messing] it up worse hahaha
. . . i love eburg.
