Stevyns After America's Got Talent
An Interview with Eldersburg's Drew Stevyns
October 16, 2009
Eldersburg.net
talked with Drew Stevyns, local singer and songwriter who walked
into the national spotlight with his performances and resultant
top ten placing on America’s Got Talent. Though fresh off
of a tour of 15 straight days of performances around the Maryland
/ Virginia area, Stevyns stuck it out for an interview.
What
inspired you to try America’s Got Talent?
Friends of mine tell me I’m pushing 30 and my career is going
nowhere – I need to do something. I kind of went on as a joke,
you know, just to make them happy.
How
far did you expect to make it in the competition when you first
entered?
I didn’t have high expectations. I mean, I was stuck there
with tens of thousands of people and I kind of figured from the
get-go that I wasn’t gonna go very far. But I ended up spending
the whole day there, you know, from 6 o’clock in the morning
till 7 o’clock at night. Yeah, I couldn’t believe I
actually, you know, made it onto the show.
Your
musical taste seems varied. What artists most influence you?
I’d probably say the Doors, Nirvana, Alice in Chains.
I have no problem listening to a lot of music.
How
do you think winning AGT would have changed your life?
To be honest, I’m kind of glad that I didn’t win. I
got the exposure that I wanted without having to be a part of the
show for any longer.
Have
more people locally recognized you since your national debut?
I don’t get mobbed walking down the street, but I’ve
definitely got a lot more people coming out to the shows for sure
– yeah, definitely seen an increase of people coming down
to see me. You know, before I was singing to whoever was at the
bar at the time.
What
did you take away from the experience?
I learned a lot about the industry, man. It was just nice being
out in L.A. with a lot of creative people. It was just nice to be
around a lot of creative people and feel like you were going somewhere.
Were
you surprised by who won the AGT competition? Who did you expect
to win?
He’s who most people expected to win just for the simple fact
that he had so many hits during the course of the show – you
know, just the amount of exposure he had, I don’t think people
were surprised at all. It was kind of strange seeing him up there
standing next to Barbara Padilla, to be honest. I mean, I definitely
thought that she deserved to win more than anybody.
What
was it like playing for a large venue like AGT?
It was nerve-wracking. Having to walk out on that stage and knowing
that there was millions of people watching, it took a lot to get
my head together and walk out there and get it done. Close to the
end, I was really starting to enjoy it though. I started getting
the hang of things and knowing the ropes – what camera to
look at, at what time. I made it to the top ten, and I never expected
to get that far, just, you know, I decided to have fun with it at
that point. So there was no pressure at the end.
I
noticed that you used to be in a band. Do you plan on staying solo?
Actually, I got a band waiting for me in L.A. . . . A guitar company,
Paul Reed Smith, picked me up and, um, he set the whole thing up
out there. It should be a good experience and I can’t wait
to, you know, get with a band again and start doing that.
Do
you spend a lot of time in Eldersburg?
Yeah, when I’m in the area, for sure I’ll crash out
around here. I pretty much play between Maryland and Virginia, so
yeah, whenever I’m in town I’m definitely in Eldersburg.
I was surprised to see Meikeljohns shut down – I went up there
one night and went ‘What the Hell?’
What
is your favorite place to visit in the Eldersburg / Sykesville area?
Right now, I guess Buffalo Wings [and Beer], you know, just cause
it’s close by. Yeah, I go up there a lot to shoot some pool
sometimes. I’m trying to get down to Baldwin’s Station,
actually – I might be playing some shows there.
How
much time do you dedicate to your music? How grueling is your rehearsal
and play schedule?
On average, I mean right now I’m playing six, seven nights
a week without fail. When I’m not playing I’m writing
or, you know, learning more songs.
You
seem to have a lot of requests for Freebird at the smaller concerts
you do. Is there any chance you’ll add that to your song line
up?
Yeah, me and every other singer out there – there’s
always one. I’m going to do it one day to spite everybody.
Yeah, cause nobody plays it, everybody just requests it as a joke
– and one of these days I’m just going to break out.
