Performance on Semifinals of America's Got Talent
Eldersburg’s
Drew Stevyns drew judge
appraise Tuesday night on
America’s Got Talent with his performance of Seether’s
“Careless Whisper,” a modern rock version of the 1984
George Michael single.
Stevyns
went up against nine other acts that varied from
percussion bands to opera singers. He will fight them for America’s
votes to proceed into the finals of the talent competition, where
the winner gets a $1 million prize as well as a show in Las Vegas.
Voting took place Tuesday night, and the results will air Wednesday
at 9 p.m.
Judge
Sharon Osbourne mentioned that he had “made the song his own”
by changing it to a deeper rock version, perhaps unaware on the
rock version that already existed. Despite voicing her distaste
for the song choice, she had nothing negative to say about the singer.
“I
think you definitely have star quality about you and I really
do hope America votes you in,” Osbourne said. “You need
to be here for our final next week.”
Judge
David Hasselhoff mentioned that the beginning of the song
started off poorly, but that it picked up. He said he thought the
rock
version was a good choice because it seemed to rile the audience
up.
“That
whole sound really turns me on and I think it turned on
half the audience as well,” he said. “If you make it
to the next one… bring it on, keep going.”
Piers
Morgan mentioned that it was a “massive gamble” for
Stevyns to perform that song in such a fashion, but that in the
end it paid off.
The Twitter-feed
Views
of Stevyns on the popular social networking site Twitter
are mixed. Some users are in awe of Stevyns’ performance and
persona while others think he is not up to snuff when compared to
other performers.
“I
loved Drew Stevyns' performance on AGT. The judges suck, they
didn't recognize the new version of Careless Whisper. DREW ROCKS!”
wrote user Verogirl.
User
VisioneBella echoed the previous message. “Hope everyone
just saw Drew Stevyns perform on AGT!!! He was GREAT!” they
said.
HelloKit
had a very different opinion of the singer’s performance.
“Watching America's Got Talent - I think I'm grumpier than
Piers tonight. How did he not hear that Drew Stevyns was completely
flat?”
Others, like user RalmonTheGen, were a bit taken back by Stevyns’
black horse run. “Who IS this Drew Stevyns? Audition not aired,
out
of nowhere as a wild card, voted thru to the semis - seems to be
a judge favorite - huh?” |
