Many Eldersburg and Sykesville residents will attend
the big game next week, but whose side will they be cheering from?
Rival football fans from the same neighborhood may be attending
this tough game of neighboring high schools. Kickoff is set for
7 p.m. and the stakes are high.
The Century Knights, reigning county champions, lost the first three games of the season, but have taken control since then with two wins against Manchester Valley and South Carroll. There are several key players to watch during this match-up. Quarterback Josh Bordner runs the Knight's offense and two-year starter Mike Lanni serves as anchor for the offensive line. Lanni also starts on defense. Sean Maguire pulls through on short yardage situations and Zach Zile, two-year starter on offense and defense, leads the team in receptions and is second in sacks.
The Liberty Lions have had a rough start with one win and four losses this season. They showed promise in their win against Westminster with effective runs. Quarterback Geoffrey Suddath will be one to watch with his speed and is leading the offense in rushing. Jordan Weaver, a very skilled linebacker, leads the team in tackles. The Lions will be playing the Knights on their Senior Night and they are "taking things one game at a time," says coach Jeff Kent. "Of course, Century is a rival and it becomes a special game. The energy level definitely picks up."
Century coach Jim Holzman is excited about the game against
Liberty. "It is always a competitive contest. Each team always steps
up their play in this game. The turnout for last year's game was
great and we look forward to playing them at their place this year."
