Eldersburg Among Top 100 Places to Live

Money Magazine's annual list of Top 100 Best Places to Live this year features Carroll County's own Eldersburg. The community of 21,800 people in southeastern Carroll is ranked No. 56.

"We've always known Eldersburg is a great place to live. Now the rest of American is in on our secret," said County Commissioner Julia W. Gouge.

"Our work improving the economic of this county is paying off," said Commissioner Dean L. Minnich. In every category that looked at tax rates, Eldersburg was below the average."

"As a resident of Eldersburg, I think we should have been ranked No. 1." Said Commissioner Michael D. Aimmer. "But seriously, we have every reason to be proud - a great education system, very low crime rate, and terrific residents."

To complete its list, Money looked at places with populations between 7,500 and 50,000. the 2,876 areas originally considered were screened. The top 466 places were ranked based on factors such as: purchasing power, property taxes, education, job growth, availability of leisure and cultural activities, weather, and health. Community leaders and residents in the top 70 communities were interviewed.

Eldersburg being selected as one of the best places to live is not surprising to Eldersburg residents. In our Eldersburg Living Survey 2007, Eldersburg residents listed Quality of Life as their favorite thing about Eldersburg, moreso than the people, schools, or beauty of the area. According to the Money Magazine list, Eldersburg boasts one of the lowest crime rates, with personal crime incidents listed at one per thousand, well below the thirteen per thousand average of the best places to live. This reality is realized by residents; in our recent survey, residents did not list crime as one of the top problems of Eldersburg, with fewer than 3 percent listing crime as the biggest problem in Eldersburg.
