Principal
Florence Oliver Retires
Liberty High’s former principal and teacher looks
back on 18 years fondly and looks forward to a new chapter of life.
After 18 years of teaching and as principal, Liberty High School’s
Florence Oliver has announced her well-earned retirement.
Oliver
spent 16 years at Liberty an assistant principal and main principal.
She now plans on moving to Delaware with her husband and sailing.
Her first trip will be down to Florida and the Bahamas once they
have the boat in August. They plan to travel six to nine months
out of the year.
She
also looks forward to seeing her grandchildren more often, since
the school calendar doesn’t allow a lot of time for visiting
family. Her family at Liberty, though, will always stay in her heart.
“We’ve
really made it more of a family atmosphere with both the staff and
the students,” she said, “I think that kids feel like
they belong here… people across the board try to demonstrate
that they care about these kids.”
Oliver
was pleased with the many changes she has witnessed over the years.
“We’re proud of what we’re doing but we know there’s
always room for improvement, too.” She noted the ongoing construction
around the school, which is having new flooring and many more improvements
made for the next year.
One
of the biggest improvements has been the achievement of the students.
Liberty High School boasts the best attendance in Carroll County
and SAT scores of generally first or second.
Oliver
has full faith that the school will keep its high standards in years
to come. As Oliver moves out, someone must move up, and that someone
is former assistant principal Dwayne Piper.
“He’s
very well qualified and very prepared. I think he’ll do a
very nice job,” Oliver said of Piper, who has been assistant
principal for four years at Liberty. With the faculty being so close,
she doesn’t feel there will be any radical change.
“It’s
not going to be like a totally new school, there will be some things
that are different. For one he’s a man and a different age,”
Oliver joked, “But the principle values are very much the
same.”
Florence
Oliver’s final day at Liberty is June 30, 2006.
“It’s
exciting to be moving on to something new,” she said, “But
it’s also gratifying to reflect back on my career and see
that a lot of things I wanted to do have come together to make a
lot of positive changes here at Liberty.”
