Homemade
Bomb Explodes at KFC
July 24, 2007
On the night of Friday, July 20, 2007, what is commonly
known as a “soda bottle bomb” or “The Works bomb”
exploded in the local KFC on the corner of Route 32 and Georgetown
Boulevard. “Someone decided it would be funny to make a bomb
out of Drain-o and aluminum foil and throw it in [the building],”
said Ann Woodie, a supervisor at KFC. Although no one was hurt,
the bomb caused $2,000 worth of damage.
Videos of soda bottle bombs have been circulating
the Internet lately, with many users claiming it to be “good,
safe fun” and comparing it to last year’s Diet Cola/Mentos
explosions. In actuality, the newest explosive fad is much more
dangerous than many people realize. The bomb is made out of household
products that, when mixed together, create a chemical reaction much
like vinegar and baking powder but much more powerful. The chemicals
are also corrosive and the resulting explosion releases a cloud
of smoke that is dangerous to people with asthma or other breathing
disorders.
“I
don’t think that it was malicious,” said Woodie, “They
just didn’t realize how traumatizing and dangerous it was.”
Woodie was not working at the time of the explosion, but she explained
that the workers – most of them teenagers – were upset
by the event and some of their parents wanted them to quit. “Yet
it could happen anywhere,” Woodie said.
Woodie
said that the teenagers walked into the store with two bottles,
threw one into a trashcan behind the counter by the drive thru window
and threw another one by the back door. The one in the trash can
went off, the other, Woodie said, was a dud. Customers in the store
were evacuated and the store shut down while authorities and the
health department were called. The crew working that night stayed
until nearly 4:00 am to clean up the resulting mess so that the
store could re-open at 12:30 the next day after the health department
said it was okay to do so.
As for the vandals, Woodie says that there are “some
subjects of interest” and that some people have been brought
in for questioning. She says that the vandals, if caught, will not
be in much trouble. “Probably say there’s not enough
evidence,” she said. “Probably just get a slap on the
wrist although I don’t particularly agree with that. They
need to understand that this is a big deal, especially after 9/11.”
The case is still under investigation.
