Main Street Eldersburg: "Green" Shopping Center
September 12, 2007

The new “green” development will be located near the intersection of routes 26 and 32 off of Londontowne Boulevard. Main Street Eldersburg will be constructed on a 12.5 acre site. The architect of the $20 million development is Bignell, Watkins and Hasser and the Landscape architect of the project is Daft-McCune-Walker.

Completion of the project is expected for fall of 2008. This will be the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) – certified shopping center in the Mid-Atlantic region. The number of energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly features in the projects design has led to pre-construction Silver Core and Shell LEED certification from the USGBC (United States Green Building Council).

Main Street Eldersburg will be utilizing a number of “green” design features in efforts to save energy and the environment.

A “daylighting” system will be incorporated, using strategic placement of glass panels. In addition to a high efficiency heating, ventilating and air condition system, the “daylighting” method is estimated to save 30% of energy usage each year. In efforts of saving 30% water use every year, a cistern water system will be installed. This system will capture and reuse rainwater from the roofs of the buildings. In addition to this, drought resistant plants will be incorporated as well as porous concrete which allows the rainwater to go through to the ground instead of causing excessive runoff. Besides being porous, the pavement will be white to reflect the suns rays and reduce the “heat island” effect.

Not only is the shopping center going to be energy-efficient and environment-friendly, but the construction of it as well. Approximately 10% of the materials being used will be from recycled matter and 50% of materials will be locally manufactured to cut down on the need for transportation fuel. Of the waste produced during construction, 75% will be recycled.
