Mother and Son Save Toddler Daughter from Drowning
June 29, 2007

Last Friday, June 22, 2007 at approximately 5:30 pm, Sarah Lorentson only 21 months old, found a way into the backyard swimming pool. Had it not been for her older brother, Jacob Lorentson, 14, who found her minutes later, Sarah may have drowned.

“I thought she was gone,” said Jacob. As soon as he saw her floating in the pool, he said he jumped in without a second thought. Stacey Lorentson jumped in only moments after to help Jacob take their toddler out of the water. While Jacob called for the help of their next door neighbor who was gardening, Stacey began CPR. By 5:39, Jacob had called 911 and was helping his mother bring his baby sister back.

By the time the ambulance arrived, Sarah was breathing on her own thanks to the CPR. The ambulance rushed Sarah to the Liberty High School parking lot where a helicopter flew her to Johns Hopkins pediatric center in Baltimore. By the next day, Sarah was back to perfect health.

Sykesville fire and EMS crews recognized the mother and son for their quick thinking and knowledge to save Sarah. Stacey Sorentson and her husband, Chris, have taught each of their children to call 911 in an emergency. Stacey’s CPR skills came from a class she took in high school, she says, nearly twenty years ago. “I just knew from that class I took 20 years ago what I needed to do,” she said. Stacey says that she is especially glad that no one panicked. Had they not known what to do, this happy ending could have been a tragedy.
