Mayor
O'Malley Visits Eldersburg on Campaign Trail
South
Carroll Democratic Club Welcomes Maryland Governor Candidate - July
7, 2006
Baltimore
Mayor Martin O’Malley visited the South Carroll Democratic
Club last night and discussed his platform for Maryland State Governor.
The meeting
was held at the South Carroll Senior Center on Bartholow Road, although
the club does not usually meet in July and August or on Thursday
nights, but this was the best time Mayor O’Malley could schedule
a visit, said club president Anita Riley, “And I wasn’t
going to say no.”
Over 50 people
from around the area packed into the senior center – mostly
democrats, but one republican who received appreciative applause
by attending before Mayor O’Malley arrived.
Since O’Malley
was running late, President Riley had time to announce her candidacy
for commissioner, introduce the club officers and open discussion.
“Until he gets here, talk amongst yourselves.”
Once
O’Malley arrived, he was welcomed with standing applause and
introduced as “the
next governor as Maryland.” He spoke for approximately twenty
minutes about his platform.
“Our goals
are these: to strengthen and grow our middle class and expand our
home-based businesses by improving public safety and public education
in every corner of our state, and by expanding our opportunities
for learning, for earning, for enjoying the health of the people
we love, as well as the health and the beauty of this environment
that God’s given us in the Chesapeake Bay region, to more
people, including the next generation, rather than few.”
He went on to
discuss how he envisioned Maryland leading the way in our country
and specific ways he wanted to make this change and for what reasons.
He stressed caring for others and supporting each other as a community
and not a crowd. “We can drop smart bombs on enemy outhouses
half a globe away but we can’t drop a palate of bottled water
on or neighbors in the super dome?”
After his speech,
O’Malley opened the floor for questions and discussion. Attendants
posed questions about the energy crisis, consensus among board members,
transportation, and the condition of Baltimore city. “We have
reduced violent crime to its lowest levels since the 1960s and we’re
not done yet,” he said, as well as having five consecutive
years of all schools city-wide scoring majority proficiency in reading
and math where before there were none.
The
session was more than an hour long and although he did not have
time to answer all questions, he encouraged the group to visit his
website (www.OMalleyBrown.com)
for more information.
