Patapsco River re-opens to recreation, fishing

April 17, 2008 –
Contaminants in the Patapsco River have dissipated sufficiently to allow fishing and recreation in its waters again. Carroll County officials were notified this morning that the river could be reopened. Brian Flynn, supervisor of water quality in the Health Department’s Bureau of Environmental Health, said that the volume of water in the river, coupled with the dilution by county crews at the time of the spill, enabled the river to re-open quickly. “It had the potential to be much, much worse,” Flynn said this afternoon. At 10:15 a.m. on April 15, a backhoe ruptured a pipe on Sandusky Road in Sykesville, allowing 10,000 to 15,000 gallons of untreated sewage to leak into a storm drain that led into the Patapsco. The break was fixed by 4 p.m. that day. No customer lost service during the repairs.
