SCBA Meeting - July 15, 2009 The South Carroll Business Association (SCBA) hosted Gargoyles, Inc. Chief Operating Officer and President John Curran at its luncheon at Salerno’s on July 15, 2009. The Gargoyles company specializes the three dimensional weaving of various materials to create products with increased strength and decreased weight. The company is located at 229 E. Main Street in Westminster and according to Curran does about $75 million in business per year. It services various industries and has a global reach, he explained. He mentioned that Gargoyle’s had a contract to make body armor for the entire country of Indonesia. With business like this Gargoyles has rocketed into a multibillion-dollar company, Curran said. He brought several products to display - among them was a wheel and body armor constructed using the special weaving technique. He said the wheel was designed for Harley Davidson and was a much lighter product than typical wheels, weighing in at only 4.5 pounds. The body armor had the same advantage, weighing in at about 3.3 pounds as compared to the heavier armor currently in use by the military. Curran added that the products made did not rely on one material. He emphasized that the specialty of his company was the weaving process that could make materials up to six inches thick. “We can use the weaving technology on any fiber out there,” he said.
