Record Snowstorm Blankets Eldersburg, Closes Schools
December 21, 2009

A record snowstorm hit the East Coast this past weekend, with Eldersburg getting its fair share, with the official National Weather Service total of 17 inches, a record snowfall for December in this area. As local media covered every angle of the snowfall, local events, sports, and stores were shut down Saturday.

THE SNOWSTORM IS COMING!!
As forecasts about the amount of snow kept increasing Friday, from 5 to 10 to possibly 20 inches, Eldersburg residents increasingly kicked into hunter-gatherer mode in search of toilet paper, bread, and milk. The Eldersburg Martin's store was packed, with reports of lines lasting over an hour and the parking lot jammed. Safeway and Shoppers Food Warehouse were not as bad, but still much busier than usual.

Snow Shuts Down Town
Snowfall started late Friday night and continued throughout most of Saturday, with snow ending about 10 p.m. Saturday night. The snow covered roads, with almost allroads impassable until Sunday morning. As expected, anything that was planned was cancelled including sports, school events, church services, and more; most stores closed, except for a few large stores such as Walmart weathering the storm.

From resident on Monroe Avenue:
"I went into our backyard, away from the house and took 3 measurements at lease 12 feet apart, at 6:30 pm and it averaged 17". BTW, our road was last plowed at 1-2 pm and only passable by following ruts from previous trucks!"
