Start-Up
Carroll
Free Startup Business Assistance from Local Group
Starting
a new business can be an intimidating and sometimes confusing experience.
Many people starting a new business often have a good business idea
but may not know how to get started. Fortunately for those starting
a business in Carroll County, Maryland, there is Start-Up Carroll,
a group of experienced business people, to help in the process.
Start-Up
Carroll, started by Eldersburg businessman Doug Howard of BDG, provides
new Carroll County businesses with free services, advice, and resources
to help them start successfully. Providing services such as obtaining
a Tax ID Number, registering a business name and tax licenses, business
planning, and more, Start-Up Carroll works closely with businesses
to help them through both the administrative requirements as well
as providing basic business planning and advice.
The Start-Up Carroll group consists of Business Development Group
(BDG) and several affiliates, each donating their respective expertise
and time. The affiliates are AIM Concepts, Advantage Internet Marketing,
Creative Sol, Tekasys Technologies and The Miller Small Business
Center at Carroll Community College. Affiliates provide one-on-one
advice, resources, and hold a series of small business seminars
at Carroll Community College.
Recently completing their first year, Start-Up Carroll helped over
fifty people starting businesses or planning on starting a business.
Of those, twenty-eight have actually gone on to start their own
business. These include a bird house manufacturer, a tack shop for
horse riding supplies, and a family restaurant. Several of the Start-Up
Carroll participants have credited the free program for their ability
to get started, stating that they couldn’t have done so otherwise.

Carroll Founder Doug Howard |
BDG
President Doug Howard started Start-Up Carroll in late 2003 as a
way to help individuals understand the process of starting a business,
navigate through the registration requirements, and create a sound
business plan. Howard explains the personal role Start-Up Carroll
plays, stating “People go into business doing something they
enjoy and that they’re good at. Many times though, people
aren’t aware of all of the choices they face, like the best
type of legal business structure to choose for their particular
situation.”
Any resident thinking of starting a business in Carroll County or
those who have opened in the past year are eligible for the free
services. The process begins with an initial consultation with a
potential start up business to determine what type and how much
help may be needed. Then the potential new business person may be
provided resources, directed to other groups that may be helpful,
hold additional follow up meetings, or meet with Affiliates for
specific help in one area such as marketing or hiring employees.
The range of help can be from answering a few questions to assistance
in preparing a business plan, filing for tax licenses, and specific
startup consulting.
