Sewer Line Ruptured in Sykesville
Patapsco River closed to fishing, recreation until further notice

April 15, 2008, noon –
A Carroll County sewer main in Sykesville ruptured this morning when a contractor’s backhoe struck the pipe around 10:15 a.m. Approximately 10,000 gallons of sewage had leaked as of 11:30 a.m. Crews are on the scene working to stop the overflow and repair the line. Maryland Department of the Environment was notified of the incident at 10:30 a.m. The untreated sewage is running into a drain that leads to the Patapsco River. The State Health Department’s Carroll County office has closed the Patapsco River to fishing and recreation until further notice. Because the river flows into Howard and Baltimore counties, government agencies in both of those locations have also been notified.

The rupture took place along Sandusky Road near College Avenue, where pipes were being installed to connect water mains in the area. As of this time, no customer has lost service. Any County sewer customer who has questions may call the Bureau of Utilities at 410-386-2164.
