A large number of local residents did not read this when it was published; they weren't able to after a young woman ran off the road Tuesday morning, hitting the green box that provides Verizon phone and internet connection to residents in the area. Technicians from Verizon were not sure how much damage there was at the time, however, the problem has been fixed since then. The box, located on a curve on the east side of Ridge Road, was hit with such force that the outer casings needed to be replaced and there was some damage to the board. Mark
Nitsch, who was with the Verizon team working to fix the problem,
said that they weren’t sure how many people were affected
yet. “It could The first time was a few years ago when a man towing a fishing boat ran into the box the same way. Nitsch said that the only difference this time was that the woman driving didn’t even try to turn and just went right into the box. Crews are still working to replace external parts, but everyone should be back online. Nitsch said that they are trying to keep everything intact and build a cabinet around it, but as of Tuesday, just before lunchtime, they were working on the splicing. Most of the Carrolltowne Mall was out, although service was spotty. Kmart was not accepting credit cards of any sort since their phone lines were down, and the Tech Corridor had to close down for the day without Internet. Thankfully, most citizens have cell phones so they were not completely stranded. It
seems that Verizon Tech Support was not aware of the problem initially
and if called, they scheduled a technician to come out. This was
ill-advised, as the problem was resolved probably before any technician
could have made a home visit. |
