The Merry Old Land of Oz at Liberty High School

Every once in a while, I’m sure everyone would like escape to a magical land away from their normal lives. Luckily for Eldersburg, somewhere over the rainbow is right in Liberty High School’s auditorium, thanks to the LHS Drama Club.

The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum is the story of Kansas girl, Dorothy Gale (played by Anna Bosnic), who gets transported to the land of Oz during a twister. With the help of her companions, Scarecrow, Tinman, and Lion (Taylor Van Brackle, Graham Rigby, and Zach Scruggs), she returns safely home to Kansas after a highly-symbolic journey.

The play is entertaining and kid-friendly; the Wicked Witch (Ashley Mellinger) won’t give your own munchkins nightmares, and the jokes that go over their heads are sure to make you chuckle. Although the story is the same and all of your favorite scenes from the movie are sure to be in the play, don’t expect them to match exactly. New characters and dance sequences are a refreshing addition to the classic story.

The cast and crew seems particularly pleased with the show after its first week. "More work goes into one of Liberty's plays than you can imagine,” said junior Nolan Conaway, who is part of the stage crew and company, “Everything is planned extremely well, everyone tries so hard, and it always turns out to be a lot of fun.”

The Wizard of Oz will run again this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7 pm and a special matinee showing on Saturday at 2 pm. The show runs approximately three hours long, including intermission. Tickets are $7 at the door and $6 in advance.
