Woodbine
Hotline
July 18, 2007
It’s
been less than a year since their debut show at Jams Music Store
and already Woodbine Hotline is one of the most well-known Eldersburg-based
bands in Carroll County. Woodbine Hotline combines original riffs
with a fresh spin on old themes of love, friends, and the little
things in life. “We just want anyone who sees us or listens
to us to have a good time,” said guitarist John Gamble.
They
certainly succeed in their mission. Their live performances have
a light-hearted nature that lead vocals and guitarist Paul O’Sullivan
personifies through his jokes and often mismatched choice of apparel.
The band’s collective stage presence is welcoming and puts
the crowd at ease, whether that crowd be at Fletcher’s or
at an acoustic set in Pug in a Mug Café. It’s obvious
that the band has a lot of fun playing together and that energy
and fun transfers into the audience.
Although
the band is fairly new, there are familiar faces within the band.
Gamble and O’Sullivan played together last year in the band
Ever Since Now. Drummer Benn Breeden and bassist Mat Lester play
together in another
local band, The Doozies? Breeden and O’Sullivan have known
each other for many years; they played together in one of their
first bands as young teenagers, Aisle-7.
One
of the best things about Woodbine Hotline is the many stories behind
their song titles. Most of the titles have little to no relation
to the lyrics or meaning of the song. “It’s not because
we are trying too hard,” says O’Sullivan who writes
most of the lyrics, “it's because we normally just write the
music first and pick something to call it by so we can revisit it.”
For example, “Phillie’s Magic” is named after
the Philadelphia Philly’s baseball hat that Gamble likes to
wear.
Gamble
says that they get their inspiration from life experiences and that
they are influenced by the other bands they play with. Woodbine
Hotline is involved with the local music community, regularly playing
acoustic sets in Deer Park with other bands “just to play
and have fun.” Woodbine Hotline and many other local bands
will be playing August 11th at the Carroll Arts Center in Westminster.
The band hopes everyone who can, will come out to support the local
artists and Carroll County Independent Rock. “On a scale from
one to ten,” Gamble says, “we’re really good.”
