BREAKING
NEWS - ARMED SUSPECT FOUND DEAD
SEARCH
CONTINUES FOR MAN ARMED WITH A RIFLE WHO WAS CHASED FOR SEVERAL
MILES THROUGH TWO STATES
(Sykesville, MD, Friday, August 26, 2005) – Over 50 law enforcement
officers from Maryland and Pennsylvania were involved in an overnight
search for a Pennsylvania man who fled in his vehicle after Pennsylvania
troopers responded to his residence to serve a court order authorizing
the confiscation of any firearms after his spouse filed a domestic
complaint.
The
suspect is identified as Michael K. Voland Sr., 45, of Hanover,
Pennsylvania. He is a white male, approximately 5-10, 140 pounds
with brown eyes and brown hair. Voland was last seen wearing blue
jeans, a flannel shirt without sleeves, and a baseball cap. He faces
a number of traffic and criminal charges in both states after being
pursued by officers from several agencies before bailing out of
his vehicle along a farm road late yesterday in Carroll County.
Yesterday,
shortly before 7:30 p.m., several Pennsylvania troopers responded
to the suspect’s residence in an attempt to serve the court
imposed order. Voland was observed seated in a blue and gray 1987
Chevrolet truck, which was parked in the driveway. Troopers approached
the vehicle, opened the door and asked him to exit. Voland refused
to comply, immediately accelerated and sped from the location.
Troopers
immediately began a pursuit of the vehicle, which continued into
Maryland along the southbound lane of Route 97. State Police at
the Westminster Barrack were notified and troopers joined in the
pursuit along Route 97 in the vicinity of Bachmans Valley Road .
A number of county and local units also assisted during the approximate
20 miles of the pursuit. The truck was pursued at speeds ranging
from 45-80 mph through both states. The driver reportedly displayed
a rifle to troopers as the vehicle sped along Route 97 in the vicinity
of Route 26.
When
the vehicle reached the vicinity of Chiseled Stone Road, Voland
turned right and traveled down an adjacent farm road into a soybean
field. The vehicle was disabled and may have struck stop sticks
deployed prior to his turn from Route 97. He fled from the vehicle
into a heavily wooded area. Voland was in possession of a clearly
visible rifle. Moments later, the pursuing troopers heard what was
thought to have been several shots fired from the rifle. They are
not certain if they were fired upon.
A
perimeter was immediately established between Piney Run Court and
Chiseled Stone Road. Additional personnel were dispatched to the
area. Route 97 was closed to all vehicle traffic, except law enforcement
personnel. Residents were directed to lock their doors and remain
inside.
Personnel
assigned to the State Police and Carroll County tactical teams were
summoned to the scene. Members of the State Police K-9 Section and
Aviation Division responded for ground and aerial support. Members
of the Hostage Recovery Team were also summoned.
A
resident of the of the Piney Run Estates called the Westminster
Barrack advising that a man had stopped outside his residence and
acknowledged he was being sought by the police. A rifle was reportedly
strapped across his shoulder at the time. The witness was able to
enter his residence and notify authorities. Attempts to locate the
suspect at that address or in the immediate area were met with negative
results. The witness will not be identified.
There
were no additional reports of Voland being sighted in the area.
At approximately 2:00 a.m., Route 97 was re-opened and residents
were allowed to return to their homes. Some requested police escorts,
which were given. A decision was made to secure the immediate area
where the vehicle was found and where Voland was last sighted. Several
troopers and tactical personnel remained in the area throughout
the night in both stationary and roving capacities, and will continue
the search.
The
vehicle was later towed to the Westminster Barrack for processing.
Investigators are expected to seek/serve a search warrant later
today. Voland is the owner of the vehicle, which displayed Maryland
registration.
This
investigation is being conducted by members of the Westminster Barrack
Criminal Investigation Section. Pennsylvania State Police investigators
are also assisting. This investigation is continuing…
