Chronicles of E-burg
The Streets of E-town: Is there a Drug Problem?
Walter J. Zalis
June 23, 2005

To at least be a halfway decent commentary writer, you have to stay informed. I always give the USA Today a glance, as well as The Baltimore Sun. I get my quick national headlines from yahoo.com. I also read over local papers like the Carroll County Times, The Eldersburg Eagle, and The Advocate sometimes.

So anyway, I was reading over the Chris Amos article in the Times on June 14th, the one about the sentencing of “Eldersburg drug ring leader,” Evelyn Esposito. The first thing that popped into my mind was, “why didn’t I hear about this when she was actually arrested?” I mean, a woman in the sweet, small town of E-burg arrested for selling more than $100,000 worth of cocaine to undercover members of the Carroll County Drug Task Force? That’s huge! This is not Baltimore, Washington D.C., or Los Angeles, remember? It’s that village next to Sykesville in good ol’ Carroll County.

I wondered, how many people know about this woman selling cocaine right next door? I asked around. I asked if the name Evelyn Esposito meant anything to anyone, or if they had heard about the recent sentencing of the E-burg drug lord. Some had a slight notion of what I was talking about, but many did not. Kudos to the Times for giving the topic front page attention, but why aren’t members of the community more up in arms about this?? If the leaders of this town and the ones around it are indeed upset and concerned, they aren’t making a big enough stink about it. After all, I wouldn’t have even known about Ms. Esposito had I not looked over the local daily by chance.

My interest took me a little further, and I asked a good friend of mine who grew up in the area and happens to be a state trooper, if he felt there was a drug problem at the local high school, Liberty High. He told me, “The problem is probably bigger there than at Westminster High.” Many may remember that Westminster High School received some national attention upon earning the nickname, “Heroin High.” We haven’t heard much about Liberty and drug use (at least I haven’t), but we almost certainly should. If there’s enough drug use in the area that an “Eldersburg drug ring leader” exists, then there is a good chance it may have infiltrated our local high school.

So, it’s great that there is a drug task force to stop dealers, but who is buying? Who are buyers selling to? Who are they selling to? Who is actually sniffing up the stuff? If these facts are known, they should be made public, so that the community knows there is a problem, and something is being done about it. I’m glad to hear that a Carroll County Drug Task Force exists and is looking for a drug kingpin. However, I still feel like if I haven’t heard about this problem, who has? I need to keep up on my news, and this should have easily caught my eye.

One of the main reasons I started writing this column was to discuss what drug problems exist in our little hometown. I am not one of those people who grew despising the small town they grew up in. I do not want to see Eldersburg become another city with a problem because it is just outside of Baltimore. I hope the problem gains more exposure from this recent sentencing, and I hope everyone can later discuss just how big (or small perhaps), this problem is.

BTW: I had planned on writing an article on the Eldersburg Police Department, when I spotted a car complete with police lights, and words on the door that said, “Eldersburg Police Department.” There is no form of government in E-town that can give power to any E-burg police force, so I wondered how could they exist? I even did a 411 to try and find some sort of department, but came up with nothing. I called the Sykesville Police Department to see if they knew of anything, and they too had no idea what I was talking about. The conclusion I have come to is as follows: Someone is driving a car labeled as a local police vehicle, which is pretty illegal. Someone please let me know if you have seen or know where this car is, so I can prove I do have 20-20 vision? Thanks.
