Weatherman Gains Internet Cult Status, featured on MSNBC News Site
June 29, 2005
Every
day the Eldersburg weatherman dutifully reports the Eldersburg forecast
on the local Eldersburg.Net web site. Recently though, the computer-generated
web-based weatherman has been sharing the forecast with thousands
of people outside of Eldersburg, including people from over 50 countries.
Widespread amusement and curiosity have driven thousands of people
through Internet word of mouth to visit Eldersburg.Net to see the
automated weatherman for themselves.
The local Eldersburg,
Maryland weather character has been serving the weather for nearly
six months, but only recently has he become an unlikely Internet
pop figure. It all started last Monday, June 20. Someone who visited
Eldersburg.Net and saw the weatherman found the automated reporter
“creepy” and posted a link at a highly-trafficked site
digg.com, describing the weatherman,
“I dont
know about you. But I dont like it when I am trying to get my weather
and I end up with a computer animated dummy. Scared me at first
because I wasnt expecting it. “
MSNBC News then
picked up on the story on their Blog page, calling the Eldersburg
weatherman “The Max Headroom of weathermen -- I don't think
Al Roker has anything to worry about.”
From there,
word spread quickly and all over the world about the “creepy”
weatherman from Eldersburg. Web sites, online forums, blogs, and
e-mails all had links to the Eldersburg weatherman web page. Mostly
all of the links commented on the scary nature of the weatherman,
including:
- “Mommy,
the Eldersburg weather man is scaring me.” (monkeyfilter.com)
- “Take a look at this creepy guy.... *shudders*” (radioreference.com)
- “Scared of the guy in that picture?
You should be!
It's the Eldersburg
weather man.” (meepzorp.com)
In addition,
online discussion boards have traded insights into the “creepiness”
of the Eldersburg weatherman.
“The Eldersburg
weatherman was never meant to be creepy or scary”, web site
publisher Jon Allen explained. “We created the Eldersburg
weatherman to provide a more interactive way for people to get local
weather. We are overwhelmed with the traffic we are getting from
all over the world.” Eldersburg.Net uses SitePal technology
to have an automated character read each day’s Eldersburg
weather forecast. The character appears somewhat real but is obviously
computer generated. The feature is one of the more popular on the
local web site.
